I’ve spent more than twenty years engaged in intercultural learning, through my own study and travel abroad, through my academic training in linguistics, and as a study abroad professional.

I’ve seen best of intentions to learn about other cultures go awry, when emotions run high and when deep-seated differences trip us up.  I’ve searched for a way to help myself and my students find a way to disrupt the ingrained reaction of judgment, blame, and anger.

With this in mind, I created not just the LENS model but also many ways to practice it.  I utilize this model with study abroad students through conversations, short assignments, and reflective writings.
